I enlisted my daughter's help yesterday...we had lots of fun getting some shots for this week's water theme. It actually was raining a bit when we were outside (it was a balmy plus 7 Celsius), but most of those raindrops on her head came out of a spray bottle. She was a great sport through it all, as my aim wasn't always perfect... :)

Ghee!

Clarke Quay was named after Sir Andrew Clarke, Singapore's second Governor and Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1873 to 1875, who played a key role in positioning Singapore as the main port for the Malay states of Perak, Selangor and Sungei Ujong.

Clarke Quay is also the name of a road along the quay, part of which has since been converted into a pedestrian mall. Clarke Street, located next to Clarke Quay, was officially named in 1896, and was originally two streets known simply as East Street and West Street in north Kampong Malacca.

I have to warn everyone, I am in a beach mood this week!! The best place in the world to be, is right here on a beach, digging toes in the sand and watching the sunrise. That there was a fence off to the side was an amazing coincidence!! And a heart carved on the fence post? Serendipity!!

The Suez Canal Bridge, also known as the Mubarak Peace Bridge or the Egyptian-Japanese Friendship Bridge, is a road bridge crossing the Suez Canal at El Qantara. The Arabic "al qantara" means "the bridge".

Design and construction
The bridge was built with assistance from the Japanese government. The contractor was PentaOcean Construction.
The Japanese grant, accounting for 60% of the construction cost (or 13.5 billion yen), was agreed to during the visit of President Mubarak to Japan in March 1995, as part of a larger project to develop the Sinai Peninsula. Egypt bore the remaining 40% (9 billion yen). The bridge opened in October 2001.
The bridge, which has a 70-metre (230 ft) clearance over the canal and is 3.9 kilometres (2.4 mi) long, consists of a 400-metre (1,300 ft) cable stayed main span and two 1.8-kilometre (1.1 mi) long approach spans. The height of the two main pylons supporting the main span is 154 metres (510 ft) each. The towers were designed in the shape of Pharaonic obelisks.
The clearance under the bridge is 70 meters, which defines, therefore, the admissible maximum height of 68 m[2]above the waterline (Suezmax) of ships that can pass through the Suez Canal.

Santa in Hungary

When I posted on my Budapest site about the St. Miklós day in Hungary I realized from the comments that this tradition is not a wordwide one. So here I share with you more details on the Hungarian tradition.....the way we celebrate St. Miklós day.

My own experience:

We call him Mikulás. I guess its the old version or somehow modified version of the name Miklós. Actually 6th of December is also the name-day of every Miklós in Hungary, which is quite a common name here.

But Mikulás is definitelly a name only for Santa Claus. The tradition is the following:

Children and adults with childish soul (like me):) are cleaning their boots on the 5th of December in the evening and they put the cleaned boots/shoes to the window. Then they go to sleep because Mikulás arrives at night only when everybody is sleeping.

But its always a risk what Mikulás will bring. If children were good he brings chocolate just as you can see on the photo here:

But if children were not good during the last year they might get "virgács" from the "krampusz".
The "krampusz" is usually dressed black, actually I guess refers to the devil but usually he is rather funny then scary. Mikulás is guieded usually by one or two "krampusz" and if the children were not good guys they get the "virgács" instead of chocolate which is actually a stick or some sticks together.

The facts I facts I found about this traditions:

St. Nicolas was a real historical person. He was a bishop born in Patara (today in Turkey I guess) in the IIIrd Century.

Based on the legend once bishop Nicolas got informed about a poor family where the daughters were forced into prostitution to get enough money for their marriage. He realized that like this the girls will never get married in a respectful way so Nicolas threw golden coins to the ladies through the window saving their morals like this.

Thats the root of the tradition ..and thats why children put their shoes into the windows hoping they will get a present from St. Nicolas.....or as we call him....from Mikulás.

In a letter to Prof. Marin Drinov of May 25, 1888 Kuzman Shapkarev writes:"But even stranger is the name Macedonians, which was imposed on us only 10to 15 years ago by outsiders, and not as something by our ownintellectuals... Yet the people in Macedonia know nothing of that ancientname, reintroduced today with a cunning aim on the one hand and a stupid oneon the other. They know the older word: "Bugari", although mispronounced:they have even adopted it as peculiarly theirs, inapplicable to otherBulgarians. You can find more about this in the introduction to the bookletsI am sending you. They call their own Macedono-Bulgarian dialect the"Bugarski language", while the rest of the Bulgarian dialects they refer toas the "Shopski language". Szamos Marcipán

The family Szamos is famous of their marzipan. The Serbian little boy from Szentendre (Hungary) in the early 1930's learned how to create cute roses from marzipan.

Decades after he and his family became a symbol of marzipans in Hungary.

When you say Szamos ...I answer marzipan.

The 50th anniversary of the Hungarian revolution in 1956.

Budapest the capital of the freedom. This is the text exhibited here and I guess the core element of the revolution was really around the freedom.

Freedom from the Soviet Union's influence and freedom from the crazy reality of the '50s when they arrested people at nights with these dark, black cars.
The internal events became very quickly a war against the Soviet Union with these weapons below. Like when David was fighting against Goliat but the miracle didnt happen again.

After 13 days Russian red army invaded the country and they broke down
the revolution and till 1989 a frightening big silence was in the society about 1956. You can read more about it here.

Erotic exhibition

There is an exhibition every year with the title of Erotic Exhibition in Budapest.

I wrote about it on my Budapestdailyphoto site but here I can express my thoughts with more details.

The exhibition is rather about the porn industry which is quite strong in Hungary..and not too much to do with eroticism I think. EROS is the God of love and sexual desire in the Greek mythology. But if think of the little boy with his bow and arrows this image is rather connected with love.

But the porn industry has not to do with love. They even dont pretend to be. If you watch a porn movie you rarely see there any love story the scenes are mostly about one night stands. In this term nothing wrong with the porn industry as it doesnt promise more then it is.

But on the other hand porn industry is used to pretend to make dreams come true. On the top of this girl is written: "I would like to suck". Everybody can be sure that this lady is wearing the top because she got paid for it... But the illusion is delivered...and looking at the first photo you can see how many wants to believe that this illusion exists.

And thats for sure...women have desire too. But most of them need EROS for this..and to have EROS around its not enough to name it erotic...you guys have to make a little bit more effords to bring eros into the scene!

I dont know about anybody else but for me time totally stopped when i heard princess diana was killed. I mean, forget about mother theressa...the princess was totally more important."

I was not alive at the Kennedy assination yet and I dont really remember what I did when princess Diana died but I remember exactly every minutes what I did when on the September 11th in 2001.

"As of yesterday, it has been five years and I can remember everything as if happened just yesterday. Strangely enough, I woke up at around 5:55 a.m. Pacific Time and turned on the TV. This was strange because I never generally turned on the TV right as I woke up. I generally would go outside and have a cigarette. Now, it's just habit for me to turn on the TV, first thing when I wake up. The TV was already set to CNN and the first thing I saw was the North Tower (Tower One) of the World Trade Center with a plume of black smoke pouring from it."

It was early afternoon to me. Budapest time around 3 pm. I dont remember anything from the morning, from the noon but I remember I was sitting on the tramway No. 69 going home on the Erzsébet Királyné street around 3. My cellphone was ringing ...Nora called me and I found it strange because she was in Romania at that time.

- What is going on in New York? They say here they are bombing it but its all confusing here and hard to get news.

I was smiling and I answered to her:

- As I know nothing happened. I dont know what you mean...

In like 10 minutes when I arrived home....driven from a bad feeling inside I turned on the TV immediately and I saw Baló György on the Hungarian TV.....breaking news...., even the commercial channels stopped the recent early afternoon Brazilian soaps and I saw the World Trade Center in all fire and smoke.

I sat down to the bed behind me but it was rather falling down to there keeping my eyes on the TV.

"I was in my office on the Kansas City side of State Line Road, standing on the balcony of the 2nd floor overlooking the lobby. The security guard had dragged a TV set to a location where a crowd could gather to watch the first tower burning and hear the emerging news. Clearly that early radio report had been misinformed. I arrived back just in time to see the second tower hit. Quite simply a World changing event was unfolding in front of me. I tried to call my wife to tell her to put on the TV. She didn't believe what I told her. She had photos of her standing in the restaurant at the top of World Trade Center. She couldn't believe it was gone."

Éva my colleague called me. She was crying and asked me with a tremor in her voice that what was going on. I felt my hand was also shaking with the phone but I tried to be strong showing to her that I was Chaoren. She is a type of person who never deals with large global things. She has a wonderful calm "world" which is about people close to her and political, material, scientifical, theoretical things are out of her range. But that day she felt something happened...something which was on an other continent far away from us geographically but close enough to make sure...nothing is the same as it was yesterday anymore....

Masks as others see

The other I posted about my masks and I am really obsessed with these stuff. But thanks God I am not alone.:) Last night I looked around on the net finding people who are dealing with this topic too. Now I dont feel myself an UFO plus I found very interesting things.

My obsession started maybe when I saw my father creating a mask in the yard. I had been watching him for hours and he said to me the mask was mysterious.

- If you keep looking at it......you can recognise anyone you want in it.

In my childhood some masks and other stuffs where on the wall. I was just like 3 but I can clearly remember the black people carrying something on the their head. I was able to look them on the wall so concentrated that after a while they seemed to be alive making noises.

He was silent like a mime, but beautiful like the setting sun. His mask was that of light pastel colors painted on a white. Brilliant in looks. Its face was sad, but yet it looked so content. He also had some bright colors on his mask but not many. He was silent because of course he was a mute, and he defently was not like others. His mask was quiet diffrent from others, as he was. It has small silver bells that when he moved made the slightest noise, but it was beautiful. His eyes flicked behind his cage, his mask. He wasn't ugly, he was actually a beautiful person, handsom, the details of his face made anyone looks twice. And he has piercing blue eyes, they caught your attention and followed you through dreams. The wholes cut from his mask for his eyes where ovalish, and outlined in a silver color. And over that there where the traditional scars, these where red, a bright crimson, it caught your attention and held it. And with the blue of his eyes it set the mask a fire. His mask was trimmed in a gold thread. It was twisted into a rope type thing, but was fine like silk. The look was so delicate it caught your eye, and you wanted to touch it but you where afraid to break it. He smiled behind his mask, he knew the feeling. He was kind with his gestures, but people tried to talk to him and well, he couldn't. it was a problem he had had for forever. But that was fine. He was a stong willed person, he had no trouble. From which the bells dangled where a paper like matrial, it had music notes on it, and was slightly faded to a dull yellow. Although it was faded it fit with his mask, it looked so fine. The details where slight, but beautiful. Everything about the mask seemed soft, and beautiful. It made you want to touch. But no one ever did. He loved the looks on their faces, he would watch them light up with enjoyment. He hid his emotions and himself behind the mask, it was his sanctuary. But there was only so long that you could hide from everything, and his time was running out.

Masks

I like masks very much. Not only masks but everything which shows human faces in different cultures. If I travel somewhere I try to buy a mask or a sculpture if I can carry.:)

This one I bought in Venice. In the middle ages they wore this mask to protect themselves from pest.

These are from Mexico (Jalisco state). It was so cheap that I gave more money to the guy who made them.

This is from Malaysia. The eyes are very seducing. Looking into them for a long time you might feel hypnotized.

This wonderful piece I bought in Kolozsvár (Transylvania).

Bohumil Hrabal

During the last 3 years I have been reading books only from the Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal. 14 books from him on my shelves and there are still some I haven’t bought yet. Its not like breaking a record, I have this amount of Hrabal books because he really brought me to a world which will be hard to leave.
First time I met his works in my childhood without knowing it was him. During the early afternoons usually right after I arrived home from the school they showed some art movies on the TV. I have seen a movie several times which affected me very much. It was a black and white film about a little Czech railway station in the World War from Jiří Menzel.
Years after when I was like 21 I got a book as a present from Ferenczi but I haven’t read it for long. I didn’t know who the hell was Bohumil Hrabal so I haven’t touched it for years.
Next 11 years passed away when I finally met him in 2002. He was not alive anymore but left his books and such way he stayed with me even 5 years after his death.

„I served the King of England”. It was my first book from him and after 14 books I can admit that I was lucky to start with this.
He writes only about his life. Actually his books together are like a huge, very long CV but like everyone from his generation he had an active and pretty colourful life. Being with him in the brewery between the two World Wars I found a world which is somehow far away but still so familiar. When I wrote about the K.u.K Railway Stations I mentioned that some pieces of those ages are still present and the athmosphere he described in his books is familiar to me from my grandma’s house in the Csokonai street.
If I close my eyes I still can see all the trees in her garden. Just a few steps away from the fence she had a little sour cherry tree surrounded by flowers especially by tulips. Right in the middle of the yard an old nut-tree was standing giving shadows for us during the summer when we had a lunch outside. The only trees I could climb were the plum-trees in the backyard garden standing beside each other like two brothers, guarding the raws of raspberry behind them. Ohh..and I almost forgot the cherry-tree next to the fence which separated our garden from the old couple’s house. Rózsika néni...the old lady living in the next house regularly gave a plate of soup to my grandma....„Kóstold meg ezt Juliskám” „(taste it my dear Juliska)”.....and my grandma cuted a portion of pork from our lunch, inserting it into a little pot having some potato beside it and covering her present with a kerchief. And she also went to the fence calling for Rózsika néni and we couldnt start the lunch till she didnt arrange this just like a ceremony.

Rózsika néni, Hrabal...and my sweet grandma are dead. But they left me something I keep inside and being anywhere around the world...I know exactly where I am from.
Other writings of Hrabal are about the times when he became a writer. And even when he became a famous....world famous writer he still reminded the same „little man”. The man who is full of fear and emotions, who makes a lot of mistakes, who has a lot of bad qualities, too, but he calls himself superman, world champion with a sort of sarcasm, being the hero of the pubs only.
And now you know why I use the world superman, chaoren so often.
